William Hudson returns from England to find his wife accused of adultery.

1645

Mrs. Hudson and her reputed lover are subsequently acquitted – but only because the law requires two witnesses of the act for conviction. They are convicted of adulterous behavior, however, and sentenced to sit for an hour at gallows, and to either be whipped or pay a fine of 20 pounds. Rather than force her husband, the proprietor of The Castle tavern, to pay the fine for her, Mrs. Hudson chooses to be whipped. Husband and wife are the reputed to live together happily thereafter.
